The Inspiration Station

For this project, I created an engaging piece of communication design aimed at children and young adults with learning difficulties, inspiring them to reach their full potential by exploring the world through the eyes of adventurer 'Cory Lee'.

I developed a series of immersive illustrations for a sensory exhibition, allowing visitors to step into Cory Lee’s role and experience exploration firsthand.

This project was a collaboration with AFK, a national charity dedicated to preparing young people for the future, supporting their vision of “a world where all young people get to lead a life they choose.”

Growing up alongside my two younger autistic brothers, Sam (23) and Jonah (17), has provided me with valuable insight and firsthand experience of seeing the world from a unique perspective.

The Exhibition

Upon entering the exhibition, visitors are welcomed at the reception area by a sign of Cory Lee introducing the experience. This is followed by two doors, one providing access to the exhibition and the other an exit.

A bird’s-eye view of the interior reveals five different rooms, each offering a unique sensory experience that transports visitors to captivating locations like Iceland’s landscapes and the Amazon Rainforest.

Eureka Skydeck Room

Inspired by Melbourne’s observation deck, a suspended glass cube lets visitors experience the calming flicker of city lights. Interactive mirrored panels on the walls allow users to manipulate and distort the light.

Iceland Room

Inspired by Cory’s trip to Iceland, this room immerses visitors in icy-blue surroundings with sensory objects that evoke the sights, textures and sounds he described.

Positioned along the pathway, glowing bubble tubes mimic the sensory environment of the bubbling geysers
in Iceland.

The Georgia Aquarium Room

The fourth room takes the explorer through a running water feature high above the lower floor to give the user a sense of being overhead just as Cory experienced at the Georgia Aquarium.

The stream of the flowing waterfall would provide a calming and relaxing sound to create a comfortable and reassuring environment.

The glowing, flowing optical fibers are designed to replicate the sea life Cory encountered during his adventure.

The Amazon Room

The final room, inspired by Cory Lee’s journey through the Amazon Rainforest, features lush greenery and digital displays that capture the sights and sensations of his jungle exploration.

Scattered throughout the room are various textured plants and leaves, offering the audience an opportunity to observe and interact with them.

Stretching across the floor is a light projection of the flowing Amazon River. This is complemented by comfortable, cushioned lily pads where visitors can relax and reflect after their journey throughout the dome.

Exhibition Shop Items

Various branded items, such as badges, will be available as a reminder to the audience of their achievements, with all profits donated to collaboration charity 'My AFK'.

Exhibition Leaflets

I designed an informative leaflet with a fold-out map, highlighting the exhibition’s inspiration and story. Its clean, simple layout ensures clarity and easy communication with the target audience.
